Julian Schaap

Welcome to my homepage! If we’re unacquainted: I’m a cultural sociologist at Erasmus University Rotterdam, where I do research and teach.

While broadly interested in culture, media and the arts, I mainly study how preferences for culture and media – music specifically – relate to people’s positions in the social world. In other words: how music brings us together (or closer to ‘ourselves’), or how it reinforces inequalities and drives us apart. I’m also interested in how technology and digitalization affects that.

I teach in a range of courses in the department of Arts and Culture Studies at Erasmus University Rotterdam. In cooperation with Codarts University of the Arts, I teach and coordinate an international minor program called mu$ic: the economy, sociology and practice of popular music.
